Man wanted in 2021 gunfire case held after shootout
Chandigarh: A wanted criminal was arrested by the Chandigarh Police's operation cell after a brief encounter in Sector 25 in the early hours of Wednesday. The accused sustained a bullet injury to his leg and was admitted to Government Multi-Specialty Hospital (GMSH), where his condition was stated to be stable.DSP Vikash Sheokand said acting on a tip-off, the police set up a checkpost in Sector 25. When the accused, identified as Mukesh alias Golu, arrived at the spot and noticed the police presence, he allegedly opened fire, discharging three rounds at the police team. "In retaliation, the police fired back, during which one bullet hit the accused in the leg. He fell on the road and was subsequently overpowered," the DSP said. A sophisticated pistol along with live cartridges was seized from him.Mukesh was declared a proclaimed offender by a Chandigarh district court in connection with a firing incident in Maloya in 2021, police said. His brother, Sunny Gohana, is currently lodged in Jhajjar jail in Haryana in an Arms Act and attempt-to-murder case. Police claimed that Mukesh was engaged in supplying illegal firearms in the city.On Jan 21, the crime branch had arrested two men allegedly involved in a firing case after an encounter in Sector 39. Both shooters sustained bullet injuries in their legs.
